Thomas Aquinas' theory of knowledge has mainly been studied from the point of view of his theory of intellect. However, one of the constituent elements of such a theory has been widely neglected: perception. This work tries to disentangle the different aspects of Aquinas' theory. Johannes von la Rochelle war Schüler des Alexander von Hales und gilt als Mitverfasser von Teilen der "Summa Halensis". Seine "Summe über die Seele", die um 1236 entstand, befasst sich mit dem Wesen der Seele und ihren Vermögen. Die an der Praxis der akademischen Disputation orientierte Summe erlaubt einen guten Einblick in den Stand der Diskussion der ersten Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts, wobei Johannes einer an Avicenna, Pseudo-Augustin und Johannes von Damaskus orientierten Interpretation den Vorzug vor naturalistischen Deutungen der Seele gibt.
