This text presents a series of case studies - including classical Greece, Renaissance Italy and the Portuguese and Spanish empires - to show how the historical-materialist analysis of societies is a surer guide to understanding global systems than the theories of standard international relations (IR). In each case, Rosenberg draws attention to the correspondence between the form of the geopolitical system and the character of the societies composing it. He goes on to apply this approach to contemporary international systems.
