This biography explores the life of Harris Furstenfeld, born in 1900 of Polish Jewish immigrant parents into the dire poverty of London's East End. In 1939, to escape Nazi persecution and genocide, Margarethe (now Margalit) and her family flee Germany to travel halfway round the world, firstly to Shanghai, where stateless people were admitted without visa or passport, and then on to Manchuria.

In 1917, Elisaveta, aged 4 years, is forced to leave St.Petersburg with her parents and younger sister. In company with many others, she becomes a refugee in Paris, via Odessa and Constantinople (Istanbul). Later, stateless and alone, she travels to England.

This story, inspired by reality, traces her struggles and work, her loves and losses, and her development as a human being.
