The ten-volume Colonial Series, covering the years 1748-1775, takes the young Washington through his command of the Virginia Regiment during the French and Indian War and then focuses on his political and business activities as a Virginia planter during the fifteen years before the American Revolution.

Volume 7 of the series presents documents written during the final sessions of the First Congress, a period of intense activity for Washington and his administration. Between December 1790 and March 1791, Congress passed legislation that established a national bank and a dederal excise, incresed the size of the army, and provided for the admission of Vermont. Filling the offices created by these and other acts occupied much of Washington's attention; the excise service alone was one of the largest bureaucracies created during the Early Republic. Rules of Civility Decent Behavior In Company and Conversation began as a school exercise in 1744 for George Washington, who became the first president of the United States of America.  Washington copied a translation of these rules by Francis Hawkins’, which was first published in England around 1640.

The majority of the 110 rules originated from a French etiquette manual written in 1959 by the Jesuits, who were members of the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic order of men noted for educational, charitable and missionary works and teachings.

Volume 19 of the Revolutionary War Series documents Washington's activities during the winter and early spring of 1779, when the bulk of his army was encamped at Middlebrook, New Jersey, strategically situated where the Watchung Mountains rise from the coastal plain in the middle of the state.
