The trips described include taxi driving in New York City, hitchhiking cross country, encounters with both police and those outside the law, and observations on a troubled country and its people. Written in episodic form, the book is both a personal diary and a rough guide to America in those years.

Taken from a collection of notebooks kept by the author through the last forty years, it describes historical events, characters and processes that have shaped our world today.
