Amantine Aurore Lucile Dupin, (1804 - 1876), was a French novelist who wrote under the pseudonym George Sand. She is known as much for her reputation and affairs with famous men of the time as for being the first French female novelist to gain a major reputation. She sported mens clothing in public - which she said was easier to wear and sturdier, the clothes also enabled her to gain access to many places from which women were barred.
