The correspondence presented in this edited volume took place between the Papal nuncios at the Imperial Court and the Roman Curia between September 1631 and May 1633. These letters were written during the period of the great Swedish invasion of Germany, the recall of Wallenstein, and the death of King Gustavus Adolphus. Beyond documenting the military events of the times, these letters bear witness to the vastly different perspectives of the courts in Vienna and Rome regarding the opportunities for a new peace in Europe.

This edition fills the earlier gaps in the Nunciature reports from 1628 to 1635. In addition to the Papal diplomatic correspondence from the particularly dramatic period at the end of the Wallenstein era and subsequent military events, it also offers an overall view about a period of tense relations between the papacy and the Imperial Court of Ferdinand II.

The volume contains the correspondence between the papal state secretariat and the papal diplomats in Vienna, covering the period November 1634 to end 1635. This was a period both of intensive efforts on the part of the Pope to bring about a general peace congress and of an exacerbation of hostilities in Europe through France's official intervention in the war.
