Barry Spacks (1931 - 2014), the author of eleven previous collections of poetry, taught for 21 years at MIT and 32 years at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Shaping Water is the final book of poems collected and organized by the poet during his lifetime.

Celebrating the first 10 years of Santa Barbara's Poet Laureate program, this book collects poems by the first six poet laureates. These poems reflect a community with a commitment to the arts, including literary arts. Barry Spacks, Perie Longo, David Starkey, Paul J. Willis, Chryss Yost, and Sojourner Kincaid Rolle. Preface by Santa Barbara Mayor Helene Schneinder, with a coda to honor poet David Oliveira. The book includes 6-12 poems by each poet with a biographical note by editor (and poet laureate) David Starkey.
