Rudy is a medical student and a member of the 48th Highlanders of Toronto. He travels through the labyrinth of the Great War with his pal Fred, who is in the 4th Regiment, Canadian Mounted Rifles. Their journey begins with their embarkation at Halifax where they venture across the high seas to East Sandling for training in England. Once taken on strength, they sail to the European continent and enter the trenches as part of the ammunitions supply chain. Whilst their regiment endures many victories from Vimy Ridge to the last 100 days, Rudy didn't know that his brothers were facing destitution and living in a church as a result of the Halifax explosion in 1917. This is a story about survival on two continents between 1914-1919 and the next generation's anticipation of another great war during the 1930s.
