Roth, the great journalist of his day, needed journalism to survive: in his six-volume collected works in German, there are three of fiction and three of journalism. Beginning in 1921, Roth wrote mostly for the liberal Frankfurter Zeitung who sent him on assignments throughout Germany - the inflation, the occupation, political assassinations - and abroad, to the USSR, Italy, Poland and Albania. O autorze

Joseph Roth, geb. 1894 in Galizien als Sohn jüdischer Eltern, studierte Literaturwissenschaften in Wien und Lemberg. Teilnahme am Ersten Weltkrieg. Ab 1918 Journalist in Wien, dann Berlin, 1923-32 Korrespondent der Frankfurter Zeitung. 1933 Emigration nach Frankreich. Starb 1939 im Alter von nur 45 Jahren in Paris. Michael Hofmann wurde 1957 in Freiburg geboren und lebt seit seinem fünften Lebensjahr in England. Nach einem Studium der Anglistik in Cambridge lebt er zusammen mit seiner Frau, der Schriftstellerin Lavinia Greenlaw, in London. Michael Hofmanns Gedichte wurden mit dem Cholmondeley Award und dem Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize ausgezeichnet. Michael Hofmann hat u. a. Bertolt Brecht, Franz Kafka, Wolfgang Koeppen, Herta Müller, Joseph Roth, Patrick Süßkind und Kurt Tucholsky ins Englische übertragen.
