Leo Leaper is an introverted 8th-grader whose sole aspiration for his southern Arkansas life is to become a published author, like his eccentric mother Patrice. He is a daydreamer and engages his overly-creative mind to excuse himself from the most common aspects of reality, replacing them with fantastical scenarios and images that help sedate him from the things that cause him the most pain. At the top of that list is the fact that he's never met his real father, and doesn't know a thing about him. What's worse is that Patrice will not utter a peep about the figure that's been mysteriously absent from Leo's life. The young writer watches his mother transform into a monstrous beast, finds his house covered in muddy footprints that no one else can see, is confronted by an army of trolls outside his bedroom window, and wonders why the strange guy living in his closet constantly demands hot tea and insists that Leo not open the door to look at him. But when he is visited by three sword-wielding young boys who speak of war, Leo questions how far his mind has taken him. On the last day of school Leo is approached by an old man that claims to have the key to understanding his visions. Guided by the man's vague instructions, Leo slowly begins to understand that his recent dream experiences are part of a much larger phenomenon taking place. One that even his skeptical step-father will soon not be able to ignore. In this lightning-paced novel with more twists than chapters, Leo will be pushed to the limits of human capability, driven by a centuries-old unexplainable force.
