This is the story of a young Celt growing up in his settlement near Vindolanda, a Roman fort in the north of England. Our knowledge of the time in which he lived has been illuminated by the Vindolanda tablets, a large collection of written documents unearthed by archaeologists and considered one of the top ten treasures in the British Museum. It describes how he coped with bullying by his fellow Celtic tribesmen and aspired to the love of the beautiful daughter of the Roman prefect in charge of the fort. It is a story about people coming together in an early multi-cultural community with different cultures, customs, and languages, and how they struggle to overcome the conflicts between them. Its appeal to young readers is based on a description of life in early Roman Britain and on a glimpse of Roman military customs and warfare. Not least, it is a love story. The story is fictional but many of the characters were real.
