This book discusses different aspects of theoretical and practical Signifyin(g) in both fields of Literary Studies and Translation Studies. Regarding Literature, African American literary critic Gates (1988) defines the concept of Signifyin(g) as an intertextual conversation involving two or more novels. The first article and the second one deal with the literary aspects of Gatess concept, regarding my own literary production and the fictional works by the African American women writers like Alice Walker, Toni Morrison and Lorraine Hansberry. The other two articles analyzed refer to the theoretical and practical implications of Signifyin(g) as an analytical force within translation. In these articles, I argue that Signifyin(g) as an intertextual conversation may be extended to translation and applied to the renditions of African American fiction - Morrisons Beloved, Walkers Everyday Use - into Brazilian Portuguese, both as Amada and Uso Diário.

José Endoença Martins is the author of texts published by national and international academic journals. He has got two PhD. degrees, in Literary Studies and Translation Studies. As a poet, novelist and essayist, he has published more than 20 books. Besides Portuguese, he writes in other languages, among which are English, French, and Spanish.
