Peter (Pit) Pendleman, Hoffman Poole, and Calvin Swann, are friends who play together on their college football team. Pit is an offensive lineman, Poole is a running back, and Swann is a star quarterback who leads the team to a national championship. After graduation, Swann is drafted into the Professional Football League by his hometown franchise. Poole takes his political science degree to Law School and becomes an attorney -- Cal Swann's attorney. Pit uses his criminal justice degree to enter the Buckhead County Police Academy and becomes a cop, working his way up into the detective ranks. The three men stay in their hometown area and maintain warm friendships, even though they are worlds apart in their careers and hold separate priorities. Shortly after Swann is found dead in his swimming pool, Swann's second wife commits suicide. Not a believer in coincidences, Pit suspects foul play and enlists Poole's assistance in running down the facts. As the case unfolds, Pit wonders whether his suppositions and assumptions are correct, or if he has repressed information that has had a profound effect upon the shaping of his conclusions and finds himself dealing with a strange mix of truths, half-truths, and outright lies.
