The amount of available video content has increased dramatically in the past 5 years. As this increase looks set to continue, content and service providers are looking into ways of making high--quality video available to a variety of clients, over a variety of platforms, with increasingly interactive functionality. Current research into Video--on--Demand applications focuses on making video content available whilst dealing with the absence of Quality of Service in the Internet and the heterogeneity of external Internet clients. New mechanisms allowing video streaming and data rates to adapt to available network and client resources are needed. This book outlines these new mechanisms and describes methodologies for their integration into video distribution architecture.
