Greengram is an important pulse crop which can be grown in varying environmental conditions. The whole or split grains are used as a dal or made into flour. It is consumed directly and used in various dishes including curries, soups, breads, sweets, noodles, and solids. Particularly Green gram contains protein around 24 gram per 100 gram of grain. It one of the richest protein provider among the pulse commodities. The area under Greengram production tends to be constant with an average area of thirty one million hectare over the years, whereas there was an undulating trend in the productivity of green gram due occurrence of uneven rainfall. Greengram is cultivated in largest area in Rajasthan and it is the only state showing increasing trend in the area under Greengram. Almost all the states have positive growth performance in productivity, except few states like Tamil Nadu. The states such as Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu show positive growth rate in area under green gram cultivation with low instability index value, indicating that both of these states are performing well in the extending the area under Greengram cultivation.
