Parentheses { } is a collection of poetic observations about life's taxonomy, where the author wonders what is real. Sometimes the limitation of her understanding of this world with its many layers and shadows overwhelms and humbles her to a deep sense of appreciation for the simultaneous simplicity and complexity of the physical and spiritual world. Each poem is accompanied by another extension poem in parentheses. Often script in parentheses is treated as optional, as something that didn't quite fit into the regular text but was vying for inclusion nonetheless. The lines in parentheses in this case are integral to the poem, just like the subconscious mind is integral to consciousness, just like one season quietly leans on the previous one as it slips into the next with but a gossamer film in between. Parentheses { } takes the reader on a journey through the four diverse seasons in both nature and human life. These poems are about meeting God and ourselves on life's trajectory, in the eyes of our children, in the face of complete strangers, in disillusionment and despair, in paradoxes, in goodbyes, and in harmony. ""I love these poems. They are vivid snapshots of life that evoke a depth of emotion and the great poignancy and meaning of the everyday, of life lived. Mixed emotions reverberate as multiple poetic notes are held with the richness of a musical chord. I will keep this book of poetry at hand because it will ground me and keep me mindful of the sacredness and significance of everyday life."" --Jessica Senehi, Associate Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Manitoba; Founding Director, Winnipeg International Storytelling Festival: Storytelling on the Path to Peace ""Quite simply, this is a beautiful collection. Lepp Friesen's poetry and visual images inform, illuminate, and inspire. Her poetry speaks to a reverence for life and a willingness to embrace its mysteries and paradoxes. Parentheses { } is a valuable and timely collection. Lepp Friesen's poetry and art awaken both the heart and spirit."" --Karen M. Magro, Associate Professor, Faculty of Education, University of Winnipeg Helen Lepp Friesen, PhD, is an instructor in the Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications department at the University of Winnipeg where she teaches academic writing. She has published numerous Life Science and Geography titles for children, besides monthly contributions to the Community Forum column for a local paper. She also enjoys volunteering as host of the Red Shoe Literary Society, a writer's group for senior citizens."
