Optical biosensors (OB) comprise transducers for detecting the presence of biological molecules. A conventional spectrophotometer tuned to a wavelength adsorbed by a protein is thus, trivially, an example of an OB, but the term has acquired a more specific usage, signifying a transducer which can detect the presence of molecules at a surface.
