This is the story of a country girl, from the age of twelve, until the present time. In many ways her story mirrors my own life, with its many complicated twists and turns. I have worked on farms in various capacities all of my life, until having to retire through poor sight. I started by helping my father on his small holding, and as my brother and I became older, more acres were required to keep up the living standard. Life was not plain sailing, it seldom is, but it was, never the less, interesting. When I first started with my Father, much of the work was carried out with two shire horses, Major and Trigger. I worked with horse drawn mowers, binders, seed drills and most other equipment used on the farm. We later moved on to tractors, combined harvesters, and much larger vehicles, but I still remember the "horse" days with affection. There is something satisfying in following horses at work, but the work was hard and the hours, by necessity, long and tiring. At twenty eight, I married my lovely wife, Yvonne, and we are still happily married after almost fifty years. My father retired at that point, and my brother and I went to work for other farmers. I eventually worked for the Co-operative Wholesale Society, at a time when they were the largest farmers in the country. I milked cows in different types of milking parlour, and was Livestock Supervisor on an estate in Cheshire for many years. Supervising six herds of two hundred plus cows and the followers. Dealing with the different charactors on the farms was a little tricky at times In this story, Cathy attempts to deal with the many problems that life throws at her. All are tackled positively and with a smile on most occasions. Please enjoy Cathy's Story.
