It's a story of Nadine Doucette who grew up in a trailer park along side Lake Charm. She was a pretty young thing with long auburn hair and green eyes and in love with her teenage boyfriend, Hank Preston. Her mother died when she was 10 years old. She lived with her father, a Korean War vet, who lived on disability. Nadine got pregnant in her last year of high school and marries Hank. They have a daughter, Roberta. Their marriage suffers because of his excessive drinking and they have an on-again, off-again marriage. His drinking causes him to become abusive. With the help of her father and the money she earns as a waitress, she studies to be a nurse and has dreams of a better life outside the trailer park and soon loses all the love she ever felt for Hank. She stays with him because of Roberta's love for her father. It comes to an end one night. In a drunken stupor, he rapes his 14 year-old daughter, thinking it's his wife. She is the image of Nadine when she was her age. When Nadine finds out, she reports him to the police and has him arrested. He's convicted, sentenced to 20 yrs., but gets out after 14 yrs. because of an early release program and returns to Lake Charm and Nadine. She kills him then leaves with her daughter and grandson, who is the result of the rape, in search of a life she always dreamt of. Her journey takes her into new dangers.
