The idea of editing the present volume in the Lecture Notes in Physics series arosewhileorganizingthe ConferenceonIrreversibleQuantumDynamics that took place at The Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy, from July 29 to August 2, 2002.
