HOUSE OF SONG delights the reader with candid snapshots of Latino immigrants working, dancing, and living in the Imperial and San Joaquin Valleys of California. Through her personal observations and skillfully crafted poems, the writer celebrates as well as reveals immigrant life in America. The people, humble and hard-working, live in tandem with nature and god. The book begins with images of people who struggle with assimilation, poverty, family, and prejudice. In "Miss Flowers," the author writes about a teacher who has a young girl roll her tongue around a pencil to rid her of her accent. In "The Cockfight," she describes a neighbor who uses a cigar to goad a cock to fight. As the book progresses, poems become more introspective and spiritual. In "Wheatfield" and "Desert Wilderness," the author connects us to each other through the beauty in nature. The title, HOUSE OF SONG, refers to the place where Aztec people shared poetry and music. They referred to poetry as flower and song or in xochitl in cuicatl (flor y canto).
