Halicarnasseus, Herodotus Herodotus Halicarnasseus was born in Halicarnassus, in the Persian Empire, around 485 B.C. The "Histories" cover the reign of Croesus, king of Lydia (around 560 - 546 B.C.), and the reign of Cyrus of Persia (around 559 - 529 B.C.) in book I, and the further rise and fall of the Persian Empire in the remaining eight books. Herodotus systematically investigated the historic facts, and such became the father of history (pater historiae). He travelled for many years, and such became familiar with foreign tradition and culture. Most of his work is reliable, and in some cases the "Histories" are the only sources from which we derive our knowledge. Herodotus is widely appreciated for his knowledge and narrative style. Herodotus died around 425 B.C.
