These ghazals are inspired by the Persian ghazals of the 14th century Shirazi poet Hafez, and those of the 20th century Australian poet Francis Brabazon, who was himself inspired by Hafez as recited in the presence of Avatar Meher Baba. The ghazal as a spiritual lyric concerns the lover/ beloved relationship in which the disciple longs for fulfillment in the spiritual Master who is regarded as an embodiment of divine knowledge, power and bliss. This lyrical tradition is most notably represented in Islamic languages, especially Persian and Urdu, but was introduced into English for the first time in Francis Brabazon's collection of ghazals, In Dust I Sing.
