Martine Sauret est née à Paris, France. Elle a obtenu son doctorat en juin 1991 à l'Université du Minnesota et a enseigné à Western Michigan University, Michigan et à Macalester College, Minnesota en tant que professeure associée. Elle étudie les relations de l'écriture et de l'espace dans la cartographie, l'art et la littérature.
