When American editor Hugo Gernsback began publishing Amazing Stories, the first ever monthly magazine devoted to the emerging genre of science fiction, in April 1926 in New York City, he had no choice but to reprint the earlier works of classics by Jules Verne, H. G. Wells and Edgar Allan Poe in the first nine issues. It was only in the following years that new names appeared in the pages of the magazine. The very first new author to appear in Amazing Stories was Miles J. Breuer, whose short story The Man with the Odd Head Gernsback included in the January 1927 issue just after Wells completion of The First Men in the Moon.
But the life story and literary work of the now forgotten Nebraska doctor, who was considered a true star of the genre by American science fiction readers at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s, is much more varied and interesting. He didnt start writing for Amazing Stories; he published his first story that could be classified as science fiction almost two decades earlier, but without readers noticing. Not only that, but many of his literary works, including early short stories (only later published in science fiction magazines), were originally written and published in Czech under the name Miloslav J. Breuer.
He is interesting and relevant today because he may have been the first to come up with the idea of autonomous, self-driving cars.

Když americký editor Hugo Gernsback začal v dubnu 1926 v New Yorku vydávat měsíčník Amazing Stories, vůbec první časopis věnovaný nově vznikajícímu žánru science fiction, v prvních devíti číslech mu nezbylo než reprintovat dříve vydané práce klasiků Julese Vernea, H. G. Wellse a Edgara Allana Poea. Teprve v následujících letech se na stránkách magazínu objevila čtenářům nová jména. Tím vůbec prvním novým autorem v Amazing Stories byl Miles J. Breuer, jehož povídku Muž se zvláštní hlavou Gernsback zařadil hned za dokončení Wellsova románu První lidé na Měsíci do lednového čísla roku 1927.
Životní příběh i literární dílo dnes zapomenutého lékaře z Nebrasky, kterého američtí čtenáři science fiction na přelomu 20. a 30. let považovali za opravdovou hvězdu žánru je ale mnohem pestřejší a zajímavější. Nezačal totiž psát až pro Amazing Stories, svou první povídku, kterou bychom mohli řadit k science fiction, vydal o téměř dvě desetiletí dříve, aniž by si jí ale čtenáři všimli. A nejenom to, řadu ze svých literárních děl, včetně raných povídek (teprve později vydaných v science fiction magazínech), původně napsal a vydal už česky pod jménem Miloslav J. Breuer.
Dnes je zajímavý a aktuální i tím, že možná jako první přišel s myšlenkou autonomních, samořídících automobilů.
