This book started as a biography of Ronald Pelham Knight, my father. 1916 - 2000. Born and lived his life in Cuckfield, Sussex. As the writing progressed it morphed into a 'dualography' when I entered the scene in 1944 while Ron Snr. was immersed in the battle for Europe. He was a regular soldier serving in Gibraltar when war broke out. His first action was as a passenger on a ship chasing the Bismarck. Landing on the beach at Normandy he took part in many of the landmarked battles such as the battle for Caens, the Ardennes, the Battle of the Bulge, and 'A bridge too far'. His story is one of stubborn survival in a tough working class environment, loyalty and dedication to his country and comrades, and the payback that he felt he owed to the fallen. He dedicated his life to unpaid public service in Mid-Sussex, founding the Cuckfield Youth Club. He made a difference. My story is predicated by having to live up to the challenge that his has saddled me with. It follows me growing up in a similar background to my father and my hardheaded ambition to break out of the cycle. I roared through the Rock n' Roll years as a rock drummer and immigrated to Canada as a twenty-one year old. I worked as a logger and cowboy before settling into a career as a MadMan - the advertising agency business. I was a partner in a national agency and a prestigious graphic design studio. In retirement, I became an actor. I have woven the two stories together to span nearly one hundred years of the Pelham-Knights who trace their ancestry back to the Norman conquest.
