According to Sukhoo et al. (2004a), software project management is probably the sector with the highest rate of project failure in the world. Studies of the causes of IT project failure repeatedly point to poor communication as the main cause (Standish Group Research Note, 1998). According to a 2002 KPMG report covering 134 listed companies in the U.K., U.S., Africa, Australia, and Europe, 56% of firms had to write off at least one IT project last year as a failure. The average loss incurred as a result of these failures was about EUR12.5 million, with the largest write-off costing nearly EUR210 million.
