This example of modern literature is a tragic character study of a noticeably weird male who is having a hard time making relationships. He instead has a life-long attachment to a full-size, little girl doll named Matilda that was left to him by his grandmother when he was age six. In the beginning, the boy considers the doll to be his secret friend. But as he matures, he starts to think of her as his one true love. He can sometimes hear Matilda speaking to him and he communicates his feelings and thoughts to her in weekly letters that he reads to her out loud. Along the way this character has many unique adventures. He dreams that someday the voodoo spell, which has frozen his girlfriend/doll in body and time, will be broken and she can become a beautiful real woman so they can consummate their love. Eventually he meets a real woman who herself is frozen due to Muscular Dystrophy. But because of her friends what happens to the couple is the worst thing in the world. Dear Matilda is a neo-tragedy for people who like stories that do not have a Hollywood style happy ending.
