"Choosing to Be Changed" is Bob Kearns' spiritual journey shared in thirty-six brief essays that read like devotional material. The result is an excellent book to read with a Bible study group, and the author relates his testimony with a confessional honesty that inspires readers to recognize and admit their own mistakes.
Though the book does address difficult topics, a feeling of thankfulness and joy weaves throughout all the stories, creating uplifting buoyancy to the words.
As a youth, Kearns entered Catholic seminary to pursue the priesthood, but when the thought of a lifetime of celibacy became too much for him, he decided to leave. With the Vietnam War looming large, he enlisted in the USAF and became a surgical technician. Afterward, a summer job as an insurance claim adjuster derailed his plans yet again.
Years of job changes, cross-country moves, and relationship failures finally led him to the biggest change of all-becoming a born-again Christian decades after leaving the church.
Kearns offers up his life with humility, sharing also the Bible verses that have brought light to his experiences, and giving glory to God with every word he writes.
