This is a true story of coming of age in the 1960s as a military dependent, originally from Puerto Rico, in an overseas melting pot of multiple cultures. Except for my somewhat unusual early childhood, hundreds, if not thousands, of similar stories could be told by others who spent their teen years in overseas American boarding high schools. Every one of us brought a different perspective to this common experience, and yet it's safe to say that each of us experienced a significant life transition. Just as my story represents a transition from a Puerto Rican culture, other stories would represent a transition from a Black culture, an Oriental culture, a farm culture, or a mainstream White Anglo-Saxon Protestant culture.
