Bram Stoker's DRACULA was published in 1897 when it was decreed that all novels must be thick, so weighty that readers could later use them as doorstops. Two hundred pages too long, the novel is sometimes nauseatingly wordy. This re-imagined version of Dracula is set during the same time period as the original (1890's) but is written for the modern reader, who can't imagine using the words alas or madam. Additionally, the author obeys the laws of physics: Dracula is no more able to transform himself into a bat or a wolf than you or I can; he can't climb down the side of a castle and has no need to sleep in a coffin filled with Transylvanian earth. But two things have remained the same: - The guy is one killer kisser. - Die Toten reisen schnell. (The dead travel quickly.) www.LeeSmyth.com
