Black Star: Paths of Destruction is the second novel in the Black Star series by Tim Bosley. The railroad has come to the little town of Lincoln, California, bringing progress, and a host of new challenges. It's guardian, Henrietta 'Henri' Johnson must also face challenges of her own. She has been stripped of her title as Sheriff, and now serves the town's corrupt lawman as a mere 'assistant.' Worse, Henri now endures the derision of the people she has risked life and limb for time and again because of her love for a White man. As the railroad's new agent, Johannes Hoffstad drives his crews of Blacks and Chinese relentlessly for his own selfish purposes, the rails creep inexorably into Native territory, and headlong into a conflict that will claim many lives on all sides. While Henri and her beau, Thomas Martindale, work to maintain peace and stability during this time of tumultuous change in Lincoln, a new threat looms as a young Native chieftain called Gold Fang seeks to make a name for himself by assailing both the railroad and the prospectors who encroach upon the lands he claims as sacred to his People. Unwilling to heed the cautionary advice of those he has called friend and brother, Gold Fang leads his small band of warriors in a bloody campaign to destroy the railroad and Whites who threaten his Peoples' ancient ways of life. Meanwhile, an old adversary leaves a trail of pain and death across the Southwest as he and his new partner ride to settle old scores, headed for an ultimate showdown on the dusty streets of Lincoln, California. Henri and her friends will come together once more, facing down pervasive prejudice, ignorance, greed, cruelty and attacks from every quarter as they fight to defend their community, and one another. Against impossible odds they must ask themselves if the victory they seek is worth the sacrifices they are certain to make.
