TheideaforthisbookoriginatedintheLaSillaobservatorywheretwoofthe editorsweredoingphase-resolvedspectroscopyofsomecataclysmicvariable starsusingtheNTT. Werealizedthatalthoughindirectimagingtechniques suchaseclipsemappingandDopplertomographyhadbeenaroundformore thanadecadeandhadprovidedsomeofthemostinterestingdiscoveries, no bookexistedwhichcoveredthesetechniques. Moreover, nocolloquiumhadever beenorganizedspeci?callyonthesetopics. Theimplementationoftomographic methodsinastrophysics, inordertoprobestructuresonangularscalesofmic- arcseconds, startedabout15yearsagowiththedevelopmentoftheeclipsem- pingmethod.
