Neonatal Cholestasis (NC) caused by a wide range of conditions, among these causes biliary atresia (BA) is the commonest . Timely differentiation of BA from other causes of NC was a challenge to clinician as the former need urgent lifesaving surgery while the later might only need medical treatment for recovery. Carnitine, acyl carnitines and amino acids metabolism has an ultimate relation to liver status. These metabolomics could be detected by high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC MS/MS) and their levels could give an insight about differential expression and metabolic pathways in cholestasis and BA in pediatric patients So in this work, you will find out up to date with its references about: - NC and BA - Amino acids, their metabolism and ratios - Carnitine and Acyl carnitines, their nature and metabolism with emphasis on liver role in metabolism of these markers in normal ,BA and other NC causes diseased infants. - HPLC MS/MS, its principles and measuring methods - Cut off values of studied metabolomics that differentiate BA from other causes of NC - Comparison of these work results with previous related studies.
