Dominique Manotti, geb. 1942, kam erst mit fünfzig Jahren zum Schreiben. Ihre Bezugspunkte sind der amerikanische Schriftsteller James Ellroy, die neuzeitliche Wirtschaftsgeschichte und die 68er-Bewegung. Diese ungewöhnliche Kombination begründet Manottis dichten, unpathetischen Stil. Die Historikerin lehrte an verschiedenen Pariser Universitäten Wirtschaftsgeschichte der Neuzeit, war als Gewerkschafterin in der CFDT aktiv und leitete als Generalsekretärin deren Pariser Sektion.
