The present study was designed to investigate the antiglycation potential of hydro-alcoholic and alkaloidal fractions of selected plants. Seeds of Trigonella foenum-graecum, bulbs of Allium sativum, fruits of Momordica charantia. and leaves of Gymnema sylvestre were selected. The protein glycation inhibitory activity of these plants was evaluated using glucose-bovine serum albumin assay. Among the hydroalcoholic extracts, Trigonella-foenum graecum showed highest antiglycation activity (IC50 = 53.53 1.24 ug/ml) followed by Allium sativum (IC50 = 68.36 1.56 ug/ml), Momordica charantia (IC50 = 85.16 1.87 ug/ml) and Gymnema sylvestre (IC50 = 103.66 2.09 ug/ml). Among the alkaloidal fractions, the highest antiglycation activity was shown by Trigonella-foenum graecum (IC50 = 31.56 1.36 ug/ml) followed by Allium sativum (IC50 = 40.46 1.59 ug/ml), Momordica charantia (IC50 = 54.8 2.12 ug/ml) and Gymnema sylvestre (IC50 = 64.50 1.73 ug/ml). Aminoguanidine, a standard drug, showed 100% inhibition (IC50 = 22.45 1.89 ug/ml). Alkaloidal extracts of these plants possess antiglycation activity and may be explored in diabetic complications"
