A Mouse in the House is a short story in verse, about a young boy who discovers a mouse living inside his walls. He begs his father to let him keep the mouse, in spite of his father's warnings about their cat who loves mice. His father reluctantly gives in and Billy keeps the mouse in a shoebox. After a close call with Billy's cat, the mouse escapes back to his hole in the wall to join the rest of his family. He kindly explains to Billy that he and his family are safer there. Billy understands that the mouse has to live where he is comfortable and although Billy would prefer to keep him, he knows that the mouse will be happier there.
