Since the first edition of Histological Typing of Tumours of the Eye and Its Adnexa, published in 1980, immunohistochemistry and find ings in molecular biology have contributed to our knowledge of the histogenesis of many tumours. These findings have been incorporat ed in this current text. The classification has been confined largely to true neoplasms. Tumour-like lesions (e.g. reactive lymphoid hyper plasia, pterygium, telangiectasia) are grouped with the benign tumours. Changes in nomenclature reflect an update in knowledge of morphological identification of cell types, behavioural patterns and clinico-pathological correlations. Definitions are given for lesions specific to the eye and its adn exa. For other lesions, the definitions of the relevant WHO classifica tions for the skin, soft tissues, salivary glands and nervous system should be used. Until the revised WHO lymphoma classification is available, the NCI working formulation, the updated Kiel classifica tion or the REAL classification are recommended. Histological Classification of Tumours of the Eye and Its Adnexa Thmours of the Eyelid The tumours that are listed include those that are commonly found in the eye as well as rarer entities that have been described in the past decade. In all instances, the reader is referred to the WHO Histologi cal Typing of Skin Tumours."
