Margaret Buckwalter, as a young woman, is one of the brave stalwarts who, because of religious convictions, is forced from her home, then crosses the country in a wagon to help settle the Salt Lake Valley. As a child she, her mother, and five younger siblings, with not much more than the meager clothes on their backs, leave their home in Pennsylvania to join others of their faith in Nauvoo, Illinois. They enjoy a short respite there until ignorant mobs drive them out. At this time she bids farewell to her best friend and soul sister, with the hope of being reunited at some future time, but with no guarantee they will ever see each other again. Determined to earn the means for the trek westward, where they will join their friends in a place of refuge, Margaret's family make their way to St. Louis. There they witness the horrific fire of 1849 that destroys most of the city, and shortly thereafter suffer through an epidemic of Asiatic cholera that wipes out an estimated 4,547 individuals-about six percent of the city's population-and probably many more that were not reported. Margaret suffers heartbreak, loneliness, and deprivation, but maintains an indomitable spirit, and finally finds peace and fulfillment with her family and friends in Utah. Unfortunately, her trials are not yet at an end, for once again because of religious beliefs, she must leave her home, this time to travel north to unfamiliar territory, where she remains for the rest of her days.
