Stephen Lovatt has always been interested in hymnody and poetry, especially that of William Blake. He started to write poetry seriously in 2009 after moving to Cheltenham. This is his first collection of poems. It focuses on topics of spiritual and theological significance. The text is informed by his Platonism and Catholicism. The tone of the poems varies from anger and defiance in response to injustice, hypocrisy and foolishness; through sorrow and compassion in response to human suffering; to joy in response to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Some of the poems are inspired by the author's experience with counselling friends suffering from anxiety or depression, others address the issues of human autonomy, moral responsibility and psychological wholeness.
