This book critiques neo-liberalism and provides an alternative understanding of contemporary world politics by arguing that the neo-liberal approach to international relations is deeply flawed, reproducing violence, instability and insecurity and marginalizing many people who feel that they have little choice but to retaliate to violence with more violence.
The authors argue that neo-liberalism has been developed from Western principles, norms, practices and institutions and that it does not allow for difference and is constructed on a set of racial, gendered, historical, economic, political and cultural biases. They develop an alternative approach to understanding world politics that intertwines non-Western and Western traditions to produce a framework that is more responsive to past legacies and more accurately reflects what life is like in a globalized world. The volume bridges mainstream concerns with the state and security, for example, with cutting-edge issues like gender and colonization. The concept of multiple worlds opens space for alternative visions of and ways for the future that explicitly link politics with ethics; negotiation with dissent; and self-determination with global community-building.
