At the turn of the millennium, and now after the fall of the Berlin wall, the best way to map the trajectories of contemporary international relations is hotly contested. Is the world more or less ordered than during the cold war? Are we on the way to a neo-liberal era of free markets and global governance, or in danger of collapsing into a new Middle Ages? Are we on the verge of a new world order or are we slipping back into an old one? These issues are amongst those that have dominated International Relations Theory in the late 1980s and 1990s, but they have their roots in older...

The Presented Past is concerned with the differences between the comparatively static, well-understood way in which the past is presented in schools, museums and at historic sites compared to the approaches currently being explored in contemporary archaeology. It challenges the all-too-frequent representation of the past as something finished, understood and objective, rather than something that is constructed and therefore open to co-existing interpretations and constant re-interpretation. Central to the book is the belief that the presentation of the past in school curricula and in museum...

This work describes the major changes in state relations which have occurred during the 20th century and the sources from which they emerged. It looks at the following areas, considering their contribution to an emergent new international society made up of diverse international organizations, and increasingly complex legal and customary international norms: population growth; patterns of production and consumption; economic developments and war; political ideologies; and patterns of governance. It also looks at state strategies in terms of these developments and how the choices of the major...

This work explores a new way for students of international relations to look at war, peace and world orders throughout European history. The contributors argue that the predominant realist paradigm that focuses on states and their self-interest is not applicable to the largest period of European history because states either did not exist or were only in the making. Instead, they argue, we have to look through the eyes of historical identities to see how they understood the world in which they lived.

Focusing on the political economy of so-called new wars, this book presents a series of studies that analyse the complexities of current warfare by moving from the global sphere to local spots of organised violence. It thus raises questions about the very idea of intra-state wars and shows that these wars are inseparably linked to the global economy and the world political order. In this way, this study also offes a unique contribution to understanding the post-September 11 world. This will be topical and controversial reading for students and scholars of international relations and...
