The Berlin Wall: a symbol of freedom and a disputed monumentIn summer 1990, 118 artists from 21 countries created artworks on the Berlin Wall in Berlin-Friedrichshain. The open-air gallery became known across the world as a symbol of the end of the Cold War. Nevertheless, the question of whether to preserve it remained controversial for many years. It was not until 2000, when building permits had long since been
issued for the surrounding land, that Berlin started to actively protect the historical remnants of the divided city. The book on the exhibition traces the monument's development and recalls the different uses of the site; the various people who claimed it and who were ousted from it. Lastly, the authors look ahead to the East Side Gallery's future as a place for meeting, discussing, and exploring issues concerning the Wall, art, and the city.

Anna von Arnim-Rosenthal, Jahrgang 1983, studierte Politik- und Kulturwissenschaft in Oldenburg, Bremen und Leipzig. Sie arbeitet seit 2007 zur deutschen Teilung, Erinnerungskultur, Denkmalpolitik sowie zum außerschulischen Lernen an historischen Orten und in der Zeitzeugenarbeit. Von 2010 bis 2012 absolvierte sie ein wissenschaftliches Volontariat bei der Stiftung Berliner Mauer, von 2014 bis 2018 war sie wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin der Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur. Seit 2018 leitet Anna von Arnim-Rosenthal die East Side Gallery bei der Stiftung Berliner Mauer.

Juliane Haubold-Stolle, Jahrgang 1975, studierte Geschichts- und Politikwissenschaft in Göttingen, Torun und Genf, Promotion 2008, wissenschaftliches Volontariat am Deutschen Historischen Museum. Als Ausstellungskuratorin arbeitet sie in der und zur öffentlichen Darstellung und Vermittlung von Geschichte, zuletzt 2020 "Ausgeschlossen. Archäologie der NS-Zwangslager". Von 2020 bis 2022 kuratierte Juliane Haubold-Stolle die dauerhafte Open-Air-Ausstellung der Stiftung Berliner Mauer an der East Side Gallery.

Nach Promotion und Stationen bei der Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin-Brandenburg, der BTU Cottbus und der ETH Zürich ist Axel Klausmeier seit 2009 Direktor der Stiftung Berliner Mauer. Sein Forschungsschwerpunkt ist die Denkmalpflege, insbesondere die Geschichte und Bedeutung der Berliner Mauer.
