Sounds and noises surround us constantly and have a strong influence on our health and well-being. However, research into them is still in its infancy, especially in social and political dimensions. In most cases, the sound of the city only finds its way into architectural and planning discourse in its negative form, namely noise. However, sounds are always embedded in larger social and political structures; they are valuable indicators of the character of an urban society and its internal order. Urban soundscapes can still be shaped, as demonstrated by acoustic artworks. This work examines current research gaps in the disciplines involved and outlines the conditions and structure of auditory urban research. These conditions are set out programmatically in the Auditory Agenda. Its establishment will thus contribute to a new understanding of urban sound and open up new possibilities for auditory design.
