Opis

This book on Rift Riches: Unveiling Kenya's Carbonatite Treasures examines carbonatites-enigmatic carbonate-rich igneous rocks from the Earth's mantle-that challenge conventional geology. Derived from silica-poor magmas enriched in elements such as niobium, thorium, and rare earth elements (REEs), they underpin innovations in electronics, aerospace, and renewable energy. Drawing on pioneering research, it explores their global distribution, with Africa as a focal point, and analyses Kenya's East African Rift System as a natural laboratory, highlighting Miocene sites in the Nyanza and Mrima Hills, tectonic linkages, and mineral deposits. Beyond their mineralogical significance, the book provides sustainable exploration strategies to reconcile economic exploitation with ecological conservation, thereby enhancing global resource security without compromising biodiversity or intergenerational equity. The text addresses geotechnical challenges like seismic risks and environmental impacts, advocating sustainable exploration for resource security. Illustrated with maps and geochemical data, this 164-page guide is essential for geologists, policymakers, and innovators.
