Two risk assessments using stochastic modelling technique were conductedregarding the hypothetical import of marker-vaccinated animals into Switzerlandfrom countries where an official eradication programme was inplace. By using scenario trees and collecting information from literature andexperts, models were developed for Aujeszkys disease (AD) and Infectiousbovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), respectively. As Switzerland is recognised as freefrom both diseases the introduction of the virus would lead to massive economiclosses. The aim of the project was to provide decision makers and riskmanagement with recommendations for possible future import scenarios.

Dr. med. vet. Jenny Markov, born 1976, did her studies in
veterinary medicine at the University of Zurich. After graduation
in 2003 she worked for the Federal Veterinary Office in Berne in
the field of risk assessment and epidemiology. This book
represents her doctoral thesis as accepted at the University of
Zurich in 2007.
