A study of the medieval and post-medieval settlements in the area of Paliochora - the region in the north of the Greek island of Kythera. Mediterranean islands, including Kythera, look both inwards and outwards. The remains of the settlement Paliochora are evidence of the failure of co-existence between the insular and the wider world between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries on Kythera, when the settlement was in use. And the reasons for that failure can be inferred by placing the evidence in its historical context. Paliochora is, in a sense, a pirate settlementunot because it was...

A study of the region around the early historical Buddhist monastery in Bagh, in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India; a special focus is given to the local cave art. The author argues that the visual art represents the religious assimilation by Buddhism, an approach caused by the process of transformation through three successive phases. The evolution of a Brahmanic class is also traced, together with the impact of Brahmanic ritual and class structures on the artwork of the monastery.

This is the first major study on bell beaker pottery in the Middle and Lower Guadiana basin (south-western Iberian Peninsula). Recent archaeological excavations in the area, because of the construction of the Alqueva dam, have provided new and substantial information relating to the 3rd millennium BC, with 54 sites with bell-beaker pottery now identified (43 settlements and 11 funerary sites). Identifying the pots as high-status items, and mapping their distibution through the region and chronologically, Garcia Rivero is able to draw conlclusions about changing social structure in the third...

This work details the origins of copper working in the Near East from the Neolithic to the end of the 3rd millennium. Both dates are significant because one marks the apparition of the first villages and the exploitation of copper and the other marks the pathway towards historic times and the beginning of ironworking. Between the two ran the great adventure of copper and bronze. Its mastery never ceased developing from the outset of this new technological chain, it directly resulted not only in a better knowledge of the natural environment and the development of more important socio-economic...

This study deals with Roman imperialism and the stand made by some conquered peoples in the face of Roman expansion, as exemplified by that of the Arab Nabataeans (modern Jordan) who lost their autonomy at the hands of the Romans in 106 CE. The study is divided into six chapters. The first is concerned with the development of the idea of history (historiography). The second chapter looks specifically at the case of the Nabataeans. Imperial discourse is the subject of the third chapter. Here, the theory of post-colonialism is introduced. Three sections are dealt with under this chapter. First...

This study, based on the author's thesis, studies and compares the lithic assemblages of two Upper Palaeolithic sites in Central Europe: Dolni Vestonice and Willendorf. More especially it discusses the means by which these assemblages have been classified and the issues and problems surrounding the use of typologies. Silvia Tomaskova argues that applying standardised labels to the prehistoric material fails to adequately describe it and that often these labels are used, not just to organise the material, but to interpret it as well. A history of the two sites and their investigation preceeds...
