This book contains selected contributions to a symposium whose aim was to present methods which contribute to the solutions of typical problems with mechanical systems. The limits of performance that can be achieved by controlling dynamics were evaluated, and gaps in present research and areas for future research were indicated. Leading experts from quite different areas presented their points of view.

Continuing the tradition of the IUTAM Symposia TRANSSONICA, this review of the numerical simulation and physical modelling of transonic flows presents new developments in the fields of computational and experimental aerodynamics. A major topic of the symposium proceedings is the evaluation of present numerical analysis techniques with respect to transonic aerodynamics. In the field of experimental aerodynamics, the high Reynolds number effect and the interference-free testing in transonic wind tunnels are of special interest.

The planning for the IUTAM Symposium on Adiabatic Waves in Liquid-Vapor Systems began in May of 1986 in G5ttingen. The Symposium was held in August of 1989 in the Max-Planck-Institut fUr Str5mungsforschung. The invitations to participants suggested that the written papers concern Fast Adiabatic Phase Changes in Fluids and Related Phenomena. Particular topics suggested were: Liquefaction shockwaves and Shock splitting; Evaporation waves; Condensation in Laval nozzles and turbines; Stability in multiphase shocks; Non-equilibrium and near-critical phenomena; Nucleation in dynamic systems;...

IUTAM-IAHR Symposium on Ice-Structure Interaction Professor Bez Tabarrok, Chairman of the Canadian National Committee (CNC) of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) invited Professor Derek Muggeridge to organize a symposium on ice structure interaction. Dr. Muggeridge readily agreed and prepared a proposal that was endorsed by the CNC and presented to the General Assembly Meeting of IUTAM for their consideration. This Assembly gave its approval and provided the local organizing committee with the names of individuals who were willing to serve on the Scientific...

The subject of laminar-turbulent transition is of considerable practical importance and has a wide range of engineering applications. For this reason, the International Union of Applied Mechanics decided to sponsor a third Symposium on "Laminar-Turbulent Transition," which would be organised by the ONERA Toulouse Research Center and held at "Ecole Nationale Superieure de l'Aeronautique et de l'Espace" in 1989. It was supposed that like the two previous IUTAM Symposia (Stuttgart 1979 and Novosibirsk 1984) the symposium would be devoted to experimental of laminar-turbulent transition In fluids,...

There is a tradition to organize IUTAM Symposia "Creep in Structures" every ten years: the first Symposium was organized by N.J. Hoff in Stan ford (1960), the second one by J. Hult in Goteborg (1970), and the third one by A.R.S. Ponter in Leicester (1980). The fourth Symposium in Cracow, September 1990, gathered 123 par ticipants from 21 countries and reflected rapid development of the theory, experimental research and structural applications of creep and viscoplas ticity, including damage and rupture. Indeed, the scope of the Sympo sium was broad, maybe even too broad, but it was kept...

This volume contains the proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium on Dynamical Problems for Rigid-elastic Systems and Structures held in Moscow, USSR in May 1990. This symposium brought together scientists working in the fields of multibody system dynamics and finite element systems with special emphasis to modeling, simulation, optimization and control. The scientific lectures were devoted to the following topics: - Modeling and optimization; - Dynamics of systems with elastic constraints; - Vibrations; - Multibody systems. The papers presented indicate the importance of these topics with respect...

The field of welding is an area which includes a large num- ber of scientific disciplines, such as materials science, solid mechanics, thermal science and mechanical engineering design and production engineering. The intention of the Sym- posium was to cover the direct mechanical effects of welding and their influence on the in-service behaviour of welded structures. The mechanical effects of welding is a very ap- propriate theme for an IUTAM Symposium. Progress in this field requires close interaction between researchers in se- veral disciplines. This is reflected in the topics covered....

A Symposium on Aerothermodynamics of Combustors was held at the Institute of Applied Mechanics of the National Taiwan University from 3 to 5 June 1991 and was attended by 130 delegates from eight countries. The topics of the forty formal presentations included measurements and calculations of isothermal simulations and of combusting flows with one and two phases, and with consideration of configurations ranging from simple diffusion to gas-turbine flows. The discussions inside and outside of the Symposium Hall were lively and an open forum session demonstrated the range of opinions currently...
