Die zweite Auflage des Handbuchs Sprachgeschichte bezieht die seit Mitte der achtziger Jahre erschienene Literatur zur Sprachgeschichte des Deutschen sowie zur Theorie und Methode der Sprachgeschichtsschreibung ein. Die Konzeption des Handbuchs wurde z. T. neu gewichtet; beispielhaft seien genannt die neu hinzugekommenen Kapitel Aspekte einer europaischen Sprachgeschichte und Regionalgeschichte. Ausgeweitet wurde das Kapitel Die genealogische und typologische Einordnung des Deutschen.
